Still Life

Snow powder shaking from its winter coat,
the deer rises at dawn, haltingly,
snorts steam with frost shimmering
from its flank, white on brown.

Moving from wind shelter of dense thicket,
the deer stamps on thin ice at the lake’s edge,
drinks algae-speckled meltwater, then stands
like a statue in the fractured dark of sunrise.

The frozen lake heaves and trembles,
the rough jagged block field, disjointed and intricate,
cracks the icy surface of polygons and circles,
to echo down-valley the grind of its geometries.
